A raw episode, I see. *Revision: It all makes sense now. It was clear something big had happened but the subtitles clarified the issue. I don't know how they're going to end this but I predict it'll be something about Muramasa's weakness. A few episodes back, it showed him walking very feebly looking for a select gillian level hollow to devour. With the blood flowing from his eyes, it's possible that Muramasa being a zanpaktoh with a dead owner may be extending his life by feeding on hollow energies. A regular zanpakutoh should be gone once the owner dies since Muramasa admitted to killing his owner. I predict it's either that or some scientific research secret coming from Urahara or Mayuri, the chiefs of science. These fillers are not as entertaining as the main story. The only good thing about fillers is the change of pace and how it's unpredictable since there are no manga showing filler plots.
I think the main reason for fillers are apparent. To fill in the episode count while the manga storyline develops far ahead enough for the main anime storyline to be shown at an acceptable speed. If there were no fillers, the quality of the anime would diminish because the people making the anime would have to use stalling tactics such as what happens in the DBZ anime. Scenes that are really slow with a lot of talking and a lot of stalling. They'd rather develop the manga far ahead enough while showing the anime version at an acceptably enjoyable speed.
The manga is pretty far ahead but from what I've seen, an anime can easily show a couple volumes of manga in a short period of anime real time. If the fillers get you down and you're excited to see what's about to happen in the main storyline, I suggest you read the Bleach manga. It's currently very far down the road from the anime, probably enough for 25-50 real story anime episodes.

oh damn... they are so screwed now!! crazy plot twist... totally didn't expect yamamoto's zanpakutou to get taken so easily...
next few eps are gonna be awesome... will be interesting to see what the rest of the zanpakutou decide to do. It just keeps getting better and better! I'm starting to hope they don't go back to the main story for awhile if it stays this good!
