This is an interesting presentation revealing aspects of Dragon Ball Online which we were previously unaware of. The presentation focused mainly on Intellectual Property (IP), and the relationship between South Korea and Japan while the game was being developed. NTL’s creative director Koji Takamiya gave the power-point presentation which contained a whopping 65 slides; only the more interesting and informative slides are discussed in this article.
Dragon Ball Online: Koji
Koji Takamiya started the presentation talking about NTL’s role in the creation of Dragon ball Online. Koji said that NTL worked on the graphics, reserving Intellectual Property, the storyline, programming and marketing of the game. Koji also said that “NTL were very proud to be working on a title such as Dragon ball Online and would continue to support the project.”
Koji talked about several issues which they had with Intellectual Property and the ways they tried to resolve these issues. Koji said “The uproar which happened in Japan when South Korea were developing Dragon ball Online ultimately led to NTL into co-developing the game. Fusion was needed between Korea and Japan for DBO to be successful ” he then laughed.
Koji then continued to talk about the advantages and disadvantages for developing for a well known IP, “many advantages come from developing a well known IP, Easy Promotion is one of these advantages. The biggest disadvantage we had was the copyright restrictions that were in place protecting the IP.”
Koji – “You see it is very hard when you do not have the main Dragon ball characters to work with, like in other games on the X-Box 360, Playstation 2 and Playstation 3. So my point is it is very hard to develop a universe based on an IP when the main characters are missing for the most part.”
The Story

click here. Koji did mention why there are Namekians on earth;
Koji – “Ok so the first difference you are going to notice is the existence of 3 races, Human, Namekian and Majin all on the planet Earth. The Namekians ended up on earth because in age 851 the stars collapsed forcing them to migrate to Earth. “
Instances
Koji – “Instances hold the entire story together and solve the problem of synchronization; players must complete certain key story instances before being allowed to progress into new areas. To reduce server load we also made all Zones into Instances to.”
Koji also mentioned RAIDING which was currently unconfirmed in Dragonball Online, he did not talk much on raiding though, he merely stated raids are held within instances (just like in every other MMO).
Guilds
In Koji’s presentation he mentioned that guilds will be able to buy their own DOJO and be able to upgrade the DOJO buy spending Zennies. He said that Key bosses will drop trophy’s that can be put on display in the DoJo. Dojo’s also act as a gathering location in game for guilds and you can travel to them at any time with a teleport skill.
Player VS Player
He also made a interesting note that each player will be able to create their own battle emblem which will displayer in the player vs player rankings. The emblem you create will also be used for other purposes to.
